Importance of Relationships:
Maintaining and creating friendships/relationships help increase happiness and decrease anxiety and loneliness.
There are many different types of relationships including:
- Spouse/partner
- Children
- Relatives
- Neighbors/neighborhood friends
- Religious groups
- Other social organizations
Having a diverse network of relationship and friends provide the most fulfillment. It is also important for older adults to have social support for safety in case of an emergency they have someone to contact.
Community Involvement:
Community involvement is a great way to interact with other people and share common interests and activities. Being involved in the community also provides the individual with a sense of purpose and overall self worth. The Well Elderly 2 Study found that by providing elderly individuals with transportation is a good way to help them get involved in community activities.
A few ways to be involved in the community are:
- Volunteering for an organization
- Going out to the mall or movies
- Going to services at faith organization
- Working as a tutor at a school or helping with childcare
